TracerDAQ is full of bugs - user beware!!

This software is full of bugs. It crashes when certain options are selected when setting up the configuration. Sometimes the markers freeze in the strip chart and cause it to crash. There is a feature in the strip chart that calculates the difference between the markers, but it actually calculates the absolute value sum of both marker positions One of the biggest problems is that at startup the application screens don't size correctly and they get loaded off-screen. When this happens, you can't see the application windows buy they are running...somewhere. TracerDAQ is half baked and should not have been released in this state. I have had it for over a year now and each time I use it, I encounter new bugs and problems.

Hello EEGuy - You are likely using version 2.2 of TracerDAQ. We have since released an improved version (2.3) in which we fixed one known cause of crashes. Version 2.3 also corrects for the issue whereby, if you have TracerDAQ’s stripchart minimized at the time the PC is shut down, the stripchart comes up minimized the next time. Version 2.3 can be obtained as part of the free MCCDAQ CD download, version 6.30 or higher. We recommend updating InstaCal at the same time, which is part of the same download. As for the markers, you are correct that the time delta between the two markers is returned as an absolute value (positive time only), but the voltage difference is returned as a true positive or negative. If you still have issues after updating to version 2.3, please provide details to our technical support group.

Students like it

Use this to stream raw data in. Students can watch data trends then export to Matlab and post process. Up and running quick accurate time base, blows LabView away.

Crashes Windows a lot otherwise OK

If the window is not minimized, sometimes when you move an active program window over it, the TracerDAQ display locks up and you have to use Task Manager to close it. Sometimes closing it in this manner crashes Windows. There are also bugs with what is probably array over-run or index mismatching that will crash it; it won't save the file and won't operate correctly without closing it all down and restarting. When it starts it doesn't remember where you last stored data. If you move a channel from one lane to another all the display settings go back to default and you have to set them up again. What a pain. Otherwise it's useful and beats having to write charting code.

Product Q & A

Can recorded data files be played back on analog outputs?

TracerDAQ does not support the use of an arbitrary file for outputting analog data. However, TracerDAQ PRO does. The file must be in .CSV or .TXT format and you can easily convert your TracerDAQ PRO strip chart data file to either format within the application. One caveat is that TracerDAQ PRO, along with the data includes information regarding the experiment in a header that is not compatible with the function generator and needs to be edited out. You will have to open the .CSV or .TXT file and edit this out prior to using it with the function generator. Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions.

Sample size not working

Hi, when I open strip chart software on tracerdaq and try to set the scan rate to 500 HZ it says the maximum time frame data can be recorded is 1 minute an 4 seconds (only 32,000 samples). From your product page it says it can record up to a million samp

Hello JoseC - The standard version of TracerDAQ can sample up to 32,000 samples per channel. The PRO version, sold separately, is the one that can sample up to 1,000,000 samples per channel. More information on TracerDAQ Pro may be found at: http://www.mccdaq.com/daq-software/tracerdaq-pro.aspx A comparison chart showing the differences between the Standard and Pro versions may be viewed at: http://www.mccdaq.com/td-compare.aspx

Strip chart not displayed.

When I open the strip chart a button shows up on the task bar but I do not get a strip chart display on the screen. How do I get the main display?

Hi Ross - This quirk was fixed recently in TracerDAQ In earlier versions, if you shut down your PC when TracerDAQ was minimized, TracerDAQ comes up the next time as minimized. You should be able to enlarge it by right clicking on it in the task bar. If you are using Windows7, you may first need to left click to pick which of the two TracerDAQ windows on the task bar you wish to reference, and then right click, and select “Maximize”.

TracerDAQ provides four virtual instrument applications used to graphically display and store input data – and generate output signals – within minutes of installing Measurement Computing data acquisition hardware. The applications allow the user to customize appearance, store configurations for future use, save data to a file for export and – with the use of interactive hotspots – change settings while the application is running.

Strip Chart STRIP CHART: 8-channel Strip Chart application for logging and graphing data from analog, digital, counter, and temperature inputs from one or more Measurement Computing DAQ devices. Featured are sampling at the speed of the board (up to 1 million samples per channel), triggering using an internal software trigger, an external hardware trigger (or a timed interval trigger), the ability to set alarm conditions, add comments (annotations) to the display plot, and play back an acquisition.
Oscilloscope OSCILLOSCOPE: A 2-channel Oscilloscope application displays values acquired from analog inputs. Featured are sampling at the speed of the board, triggering using an internal software trigger or external hardware trigger, the ability to add a reference or a math channel, display specific measurement values for each channel, and scale channel data.
Function Generator FUNCTION GENERATOR: A single-channel multi-waveform (sine, square, triangle, constant, saw tooth, and custom) Function Generator application generates waveforms for analog outputs at the maximum rate of the Measurement Computing device. The function generator displays the sample waveform, samples per cycle, internal scan rate, and base frequency of the selected analog channel output signal. The user can perform linear and logarithmic sweeps, and change the phase, duty cycle, rate multiplier, and gate ratio of the waveform.
Rate Generator RATE GENERATOR: A single-channel Rate Generator application displays the sample waveform, samples per cycle, internal scan rate, and base frequency of the selected counter/timer channel output. The user can change the frequency, duty cycle, and initial state of the waveform.
