Excellent Product and Great Value

The only reason this product lacks top marks is that the support documentation is lacking. Something as simple as accessing the battery compartment is not addressed and not obvious. An internet search was necessary to find a chance discussion on the subject. Product was shipped with out of date software that caused non-operation. Tech support was fast, friendly and effective.

I need a replacement O ring for a USB-501 please can you let me know what the size of the O ring is please. Second I am interested in recording so reasonably fast changes in temperature - do you have any information on what the response time of the USB-501 is due to thermal inertia. Thanks

The O-ring is a custom size. Please contact your local distributor and if they do not have one, they can request it from us. The Thermal Time Constant (i.e. time taken for measurement to change by 63.2%) by measurement is: 9 to 10 minutes for falling temperatures and 6 to 7 minutes for rising temperatures. For much faster response, we suggest the thermocouple loggers (USB-501-TC or USB-501-TC-LCD)

Answers

Hello - The USB-501-LT utilizes a CR1620 replaceable lithium button cell battery and the average battery life is 1 month. If a rechargeable battery is desired, please use our USB-501-RCG. For a longer life/replaceable battery, you can always use our USB-501. The USB-501 uses a replaceable lithium ½ AA battery (TEKCELL SB-AA02) and the average battery life is 1 year. The USB-500 series dataloggers are not designed for continuous connection via the USB port. The USB connection is only to be used for configuration and off loading of your data. Continuous connection to a USB port will prematurely drain your battery.

Answers

Hello Tiger, The USB-501-PRO carries an IP67 rating. The IP rating classifies what type of environment the device can used in. The first number, “6”, designates what type of solid particles it is protected against. In this case the “6” refers to: No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact (dust tight). The second number, “7” designates the protection the device has against liquids. In this case the “7” refers to: Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion) with a test duration of 30 minutes. My concern is the pressure that the device would incur under freezing conditions. Based on the IP67 rating I cannot guarantee that the USB-501-PRO would function properly under the conditions you would be introducing it to.

We need a calibration certificate in order to use the measurements for oven temperature verification when specific time and temperature readings are required. Our local cal shop says they will certify one of these for $95 so we are thinking a new one only costs $85 and maybe it would be more cost effective to buy new every year if the product came with a cert.

The button has no control over stopping the data logger. Logging is stopped when the memory is full or when you download your data. For this feature please look to our USB-603 or our USB-5104 temperature data loggers.

ARH Oxfordshire, UK

Answers

Dear ARH, The short answer is yes, the USB-501-TC can be used to measure negative temperature readings. To do so you will need to use a different thermocouple that supports your temperature requirements. To explain, thermocouples come with various types of insulation based on how they are going to be utilized. The problem here is that the insulation used on the K type thermocouple (that is included with your order) will not support temperatures below 0 or above 400 degrees C. You will need to locate a manufacturer that offers a thermocouple that supports your requirements. You can review the specifications for the USB-501-TC here: http://www.mccdaq.com/PDFs/specs/usb-500-600-series-data.pdf

Answers

Yes, the limit for RH and Temperature samples is 16,382 samples. The data logger stops logging data once the 16,382 limit has been attained. You must then off load your data and start up a new logging session. The USB-502-Plus and the USB-502-LCD Series support a” Roll over” feature which allows for continuous data collection by overwriting the data file in a first in, first out set-up.

The USB-503 covers a wide input range (0-30V) and has a resolution of 50 mV, so for sure it won’t meet your needs. We also offer the USB-5106, which when paired with the CABLE-ADAP5, results in a 0-5V input range with measurement resolution of 80 uV. The LCD display shows 3 digits to the right of the decimal point, while the log file values have 5 digits to the right of the decimal point.

What is the nominal state of the LEDs while recording? What is the state of the LEDs when alarm conditions are encountered? I would need to activate an audible alarm based on alarm conditions. Without specific connector contacts to signal alarm, could I simply use a phototransistor to detect one LED coming on, or does the alarm LED also flash under other non-alarm conditions?

The LED status description is somewhat lengthy for this response so I recommend that you review the LED status table which is located in the USB-500/600 Help file and can be located here: http://www.mccdaq.com/pdfs/manuals/USB500600Help.zip Under the “Contents” folder double click on the LEDs topic and then scroll down until you get to the USB-503/504 LED status table. As stated above the LEDs are used for notifications other than alarm conditions so I am afraid that a phototransistor would not work in this case.
