Quality product / Great price!

I have 3 of these DAQ cards. You cannot beat the price and the functionality of this DAQ card - 16 single-ended analog channels and 8 DIO. These cards have performed stellar in all of the experimental setups. In fact, we have one card that is consistently being rotated between different experimental setups with ease. Thanks for a great product at such an excellent price!

Pleased, would buy again

Application involved sending a microsecond long, high-current pulse into a stretched wire. We purchased this DAQ to measure two amplified photodiode signals in the vertical and horizontal directions as well as a current shunt. I initially chose this unit for its Python capabilities, as there was a somewhat involved control software being developed in Python. It took a little while to get started, but with some patience (< 1 day) I was able to use a digital signal to initiate external processes and to trigger the unit itself for high-speed measurements. The analog signal measurement quality was very good. Good product and good value, and tech support always got back to me quickly. Just be a little patient when getting going if you plan on using the UL library.

Cannot Beat the Value

Measurement Computing hits a sweet spot in value with their products in general, and this DAQ system is no exception. 16-bit, fast sampling, convenient USB interface, 2 analog voltage outputs, free LabView interface software, and under $1000...what's not to like? You would spend upwards of $5000 for the same functionality with other brands. These systems run 24/7 without problems. If you do have a problem or just need help with some LabView control software, customer service is absolutely excellent: responsive and helpful. The only improvement I can see is in the hardware initial interface setup. If you switch DAQ systems or are running this sytem for the first time on a computer, you must use the Instacal software to recognize the hardware so your computer can "see" it. It would be nice to not have to remember to do this.

Hello, I am supporting a legacy application which uses this DAQ. When calling cbAOut(1, 0, Range, 0) I'm receiving an error code of 41 which from the documentation maps to a bad board type error. My understand is that this board is capable of analogue output so I'm not sure why this is happening. This error occurs both when the board is in single-ended or differential mode. I am using the most recent version of instacal from the website. The legacy program is written in Delphi and uses the most recent version of the UL for that version of Delphi.

The USB-1608G does not have any analog outputs so receiving error 41 is a correct response from the device. You would need to have a USB-1608GX-2AO to use cbAOut().

Unfortunately there is no DIN rail mount option for this size plastic case. The unit is light, and so Velcro could be used on the bottom of the plastic case (though field wiring could add weight). You could remove the PCB from the plastic case, revealing 4 mounting holes. You could mount the PCB on standoffs. We offer two versions of the USB-1608G Series products. The USB-1608G (w/enclosure and screw terminals) and the USB-1608G-OEM (no enclosure and headers). Unfortunately, there is no enclosure available for the -OEM version since the enclosure used on the USB-1608G version would not give access to the headers to allow for signal connections.

In that FAQ, the created application installer is asked to install our InstaCal driver set. But the end-user must still manually run InstaCal (the user must launch inscal32.exe) so that the USB-1608G hardware is assigned a board number (usually board # 0). If the user cannot locate the file named inscal32.exe, then the InstaCal driver set was not installed properly by your installer.

These warnings are because we saved/distribute our VIs in an older version of LabVIEW than you are developing in. Simply re-save the VIs, and then the next time you open your project, you will not get these warnings.

The USB-1608G series provides no ground isolation. The analog and digital circuits each have their own ground planes. This helps with noise reduction in the circuits. However, they eventually come to a single point connection under the ADC. Measurement Computing does offer DAQ products with isolation. Please contact us at 1-800-234-4232 Ext-3 to discuss the options.

Hi, I'd like to know how one can realize a burst measurement of n<16 channels with Labview and ULx. The ULx help doesn't even mention the burst mode which was proclaimed in the datasheet.

Answers

Burstmode is not a setting/choice that is supported by ULx. However, specific to the USB-1608G series, note that when external clock mode is used, it mimic burstmode (i.e. all enabled channels are sampled once per clock pulse). So, if you want to use the on-board (internal clock), then the workaround is to instead wire the timer output of the unit over to its external clock input, specify external clock for the AI, and then start the timer output (using ULx’s counter output VIs) at the desired sample rate.

The Retrigger Mode distinguishes the USB-1608G from similar devices e.g. USB-1608FS-Plus. The datasheet of USB-1608G says the Trigger Input is digital but below it states that the Retrigger Mode is sensitive to analog trigger events. Does that mean I can connect an analog trigger source to the TRIG input and set the sampling time via the trigger count such, that each time the a rising edge is detected at the TRIG input, the measurement is done?

Answers

The trigger on the USB-1608G series accepts only TTL level, digital input (0 to 5 volt logic). The portion of the data sheet that I believe you are referring to describing the “Retrigger” feature… “In retrigger mode, you can set up repetitive analog input trigger events” is referring to the digital trigger event starting your “Analog Input Scan” so as to capture an analog event, triggered by the TRIG input. Unfortunately, you cannot connect an analog trigger signal. However, the “Retrigger” feature will work the way you have described below in that the trigger will rearm itself and wait for the next DIGITAL trigger event to occur to start another acquisition. Excerpt from the ULHELP: Retriggering Use RETRIGMODE with AInScan() to set up repetitive trigger events. Use the ConfigItem option BIADTRIGCOUNT with cbSetConfig() to set the A/D trigger count. When using RETRIGMODE, set the values for the Count argument (cbAInScan()/AInScan()) and the BIADTRIGCOUNT argument (cbSetConfig()/SetAdRetrigCount()) to an integer multiple of the number of channels in the scan. That way, the entire buffer, or the portion of the buffer defined by BIADTRIGCOUNT, will contain updated data.

The USB-1608G is not directly compatible with 4-20 mA signals. It lacks the necessary signal conditioning. However, with the use of a low cost, precision 249 ohm resistor placed across the USB-1608G’s +-5 volt differential inputs you can easily create a current shunt which will produce a 1-5 volt drop across the shunt. With 1 volt equal to 4 mA and 5 volts equal to 20 mA.

You can test the digital output function by running the InstaCal Analog Loopback test. Close your 3rd party program before launching InstaCal – then you choose which digital output bit for it to toggle, and you wire (loopback) it to an analog input channel. You should see a square wave on the screen. The amplitude of the digital output is not adjustable. If the digital output toggles properly in InstaCal, then the issue is with your 3rd party program.

Hello - The USB-1608G will not meet your accuracy requirement of 0.001 volts. The stated accuracy for the +- 10 volt input range is 4075 uV (4.075 mV) and for the +- 5 volt input range is 2266 uV (2.266 mV). To attain a 0.001 volt accuracy you would have to use one of our 24 bit DAQ devices. Like the USB-2404-10. http://www.mccdaq.com/products/product-listing.aspx?oid=1596&r=24 but please do not confuse accuracy with resolution. If you need 0.001 volts of resolution then the USB-1608G will work just fine. Your resolution for the +- 10 volt range would be 0.000305 volts/LSB. I have added a link below to a Knowledge-Base whitepaper on accuracy and resolution. Please do not hesitate to contact MCC with any additional questions. http://kb.mccdaq.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50043.aspx?Keywords=Accuracy

No. The thermocouple generates a tiny voltage, and even with a 24 bit DAQ there is not enough voltage range on the thermocouple to measure it directly with the USB-1608G. Alternatives are to make a thermocouple pre-amplifier to boost the voltage up to a level where it can be directly read by the DAQ. Also DAQs that do measure thermocouples have internal pre-amplifiers, like the USB-2408 Series DAQ. The DAQs that do measure thermocouples also have an internal reference thermocouple.

You should get a USB-TC or USB-TEMP for that. They are designed for reading thermocouples, and give temperature directly. Unlike the USB-1608g they compensate for the temperature-dependent voltage drop due to the mismatch between the terminal on the DAQ and the thermocouple wire.

The USB-1608G was not designed to read thermocouples directly. It lacks 3 things needed: very high gain/amplification, cold junction compensation circuitry, and low pass filtering. Instead choose a product designed with thermocouples in mind, such as the USB-TC or USB-2408.

For 4-20 mA isolation, MCC recommends the ISO-5B32-01 module. You can review the specifications here: http://www.mccdaq.com/signal-conditioning/ISO-5B32-01.aspx There will be other accessories required for you to interface the ISO-5B32-01 to your USB-1608GX DAQ device. I recommend that you purchase, along with the ISO-5B32-01 modules(s), an ISO-RACK08 backplane (http://www.mccdaq.com/signal-conditioning/ISO-RACK08.aspx), a CIO-MINI37 and a C37FF-2 interface cable. This setup will allow you to make the necessary connections between the ISO-5B32-01 module and your USB-1608GX. Another option would be to purchase our USB-2404-UI which supports channel to channel and channel to ground isolation as well as (4) +- 25 mA input ranges. http://www.mccdaq.com/usb-data-acquisition/USB-2404-UI.aspx

Hi! I plan to use a DAQ device to gather analog signal response to a specific signal output. The input and out data points does not have to be strictly simultaneous. For example, while outputing a step function with a time duration of 50ms, can the input channel acquire data during and after the 50ms?\ Meanwhile, may I get a rough dimension of the device? Thank you!

Yes, the USB-1608GX-2AO with the appropriate software will support concurrent analog input and output operations. The dimensions for the USB-1608GX-2AO are as follows: 5.0 (L) x 3.53 (W) x 1.40 (H). For future reference dimensions for our products can be located in our User’s Manuals. Please feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions.

I am looking for a daq system that allows the following: - analog output at 250 kHz (single channel). -synchronized sampling on two analog input channels at 250 kHz (the samples for each channel need to correspond to the same points in time). - Starting the sampling of the analog inputs synchronized with the analog output. This is, I want to start sampling the analog input channels at the same time I start the analog output. Is this possible with this device?

Hello - The USB-1608GX-2AO does not support simultaneous sampling of the analog inputs nor does it support synchronized sampling of the analog inputs and outputs. For this you will need to use our USB-1602HS-2AO or USB-1604HS-2AO DAQ devices. http://www.mccdaq.com/usb-data-acquisition/USB-1602-1604-Series.aspx Both devices support simultaneous analog inputs and synchronized sampling of the analog inputs and outputs.

Raw input mode: each of them can be read separately and instantaneously. Logic analyzer mode (sampling the 4 inputs at a fixed frequency and filling a buffer) Raw outputs mode: each of them can be set separately and instantaneously . Signal generator mode ( synchronized streaming of 1 to 4 outputs at a fixed frequency, using a buffer)

What you are describing here cannot be accomplished with using the digital input/output bits on the USB-1608GX-2AO. The digital I/O bits on the USB-1608GX-2AO are updated via software and not hardware paced with a clock. If you require a multi-function unit like the USB-1608GX-2AO that supports hardware paced digital I/O then our USB-1616HS-2 or -4 model will work. If you require just digital support then our USB-DIO32HS will do the job.
