USB-1616HS
August 28, 2013
This is a great starter unit

I purchased this unit a few years ago to use with our NI LabView® software at our R&D company. At that point I was adding capability as well as consolidating functionality of some smaller older boxes into one piece of hardware. If the 1616HS was available when we first started with DAQ process I would have certain purchased it first. Some key features that are wonderful for our use: 1) Removable terminal blocks. In an R&D environment we have multiple machines that we capture data from, but don't want to dedicate hardware too permanently. With removable terminal blocks I can leave the machine wires terminated and simply unplug the 1616HS and take it to the next machine for the next experiment, saving hours of wiring and rewiring. 2) Extremely flexible input measurement ranges. We primarily use this unit in the differential mode witch allows us to measure everything from low voltage load cells to 'high" line voltage (stepped down, or course, or else you will be using the harsh environment warranty, which is also phenomenal and has saved my bacon). Setting measurement ranges is easily done from with in software, making it even easier to use this device on multiple projects. 3) Expandable. Once we reached the channel limit on the 1616HS we added an AI-EXP48 and picked up a slew of additional channels without additional configuration. Technical support for getting the most from the USB-1616HS has always been excellent as well. I highly recommend this unit for both starting your hardware collection as well as expanding and updating it.

Hi, I want to confirm the connection rotary encoder (incremental) to the USB-1616HS. Is it correct to connect A wire (encoder) to CT0 input (DAQ), B wire to CT1 input and Z wire to CT2 input? Then connect the ground wire from the encoder to both D input (beside CT0 & CT2), and also the external groud (like on the power line ground)? In the user manual, the encoder mentioned is having 5VDC, what happens is my encoder power supply is more (12~24VDC)? Do I need to do anything with it?

The Encoder wiring you list for A, B, and Z is correct. The USB-1616HS DAQ series is non-isolated, so its ground terminals are referenced already to earth ground through the USB port and external power supply. Also the counter inputs are single-ended (not differential). Together this means that your encoder’s power supply needs to be either floating (so it can be anchored to the DAQ’s ground) or already referenced to earth/power ground. What voltage you power your encoder is not quite what is key … what is key is your encoder’s output voltage range (on A, B, and Z). This counter input specs for this DAQ are -5V to +10V, so your encoder’s output must not exceed these limits.

We currently are using an IOTech personal DAQ 3005 to collect data. With IOTech the Daqv addin allows for data collection from inside excel. Will tracer daq provide the same functionality?

TracerDAQ nor TracerDAQ PRO offer an Excel add-in for support directly through Excel. However, you can easily save your data in .csv format for direct use in Excel. There are a couple of ways to save data using TracerDAQ. 1.) When logging has been enabled your data is automatically saved to a history file in .sch format (binary). Which you can then convert to .csv using the “Save As” selection from the “File” menu selection. 2.) You can also manually save your data in .csv or .txt format by using the “Save As” selection from the “File” menu. When using the “Save As” option a dialog box opens and prompts you to enter the file format type (.csv, .txt, .sch) and the name of your file. Please refer to our TracerDAQ Help for complete instructions on saving your data.

This device is not mentioned on the Linux support page. Will it work at all? Maybe by adapting the driver for model 1616FS? Thanks.
