Great DAQ performance, clear manual

We switched to this DAQ from USB-1208HS after we discovered we needed even greater sampling rate. This is a more expensive DAQ but offer good value for the performance. Considering single input sampling rates, the price is on par with the 1208HS per channel. Taking off one star due to lack of Linux support. We started in Linux and had to migrate to Windows we realized we needed the higher sampling rate. Otherwise great product if you start here. Short lead time when we were buying but the shipping is very fast.

MCC offers two different options for Linux support. We offer the UL for Linux which is supported and maintained by MCC and we have our Third-Party Support which is supported and maintained by our Third-Party contractor. The USB-2020 is supported through our Third-Party Support. A list of supported DAQ hardware can be found at: https://www.mccdaq.com/PDFs/Manuals/Linux-hw.pdf

Can I use this device to measure phase delay?

Hello, The channels on the USB-2020 are synchronized to the “Samples” and not the “Phase”. The USB-2020 supports simultaneous sampling and can be used to measure the phase delay between two channels.

Yes, The digital I/O can be read and written to while performing an analog scan. Placing the analog scan in “Background” & “Continuous” mode will immediately return control to your program allowing you to read/write to the digital I/O while continuing to collect analog data in the background.

I understand from the USB-2020 description that the board comes with drivers for Linux. Is there a Linux based C API similar to Universal Library?

Still looking for a way to get away from the PCI slot, which is slowly going away. We now use the above card connected via. a 37 pin cable. i see you offer a 37 to 40 pin cable for this. I know Measurement Computing was working on a USB replacement, might this be an option?

Hello Wally, Our USB-DIO24/37 is a pin/connector compatible USB alternative. One possible caveat is that the speed of the USB-DIO24/37 is much slower than its PCI counterpart. If speed is of essence here then please consider using our PCIe-DIO24 product which is also pin/connector compatible. You can review these products at the following links: http://www.mccdaq.com/usb-data-acquisition/USB-DIO24-Series.aspx and http://www.mccdaq.com/pci-data-acquisition/PCIe-DIO24.aspx

Why does the User's Manual say, "only use MCC plug-in power supply - MCC p/n CB-PWR-9"? The input power is specified as 9V to 20V. To insure the 2020 is powered before applying voltage to the analog inputs requires control of the 2020 power supply. The USB-2020 appears to be designed to embedded. but uses a separate supply. This isn't really compatible with with being embedded and having a restriction on the analog input voltage. Hence, my question. The "Absolute maximum input voltage" of the analog inputs is specified as "+/-15V max (power on). What is the maximum power off analog input voltage [without damage]?

Hello Scott - The note in our manual about the power supply is indeed confusing. We do plan to change that note soon. You can use your own power supply if you wish. The DC range of your power supply should be within the range of 9V to 20V. In the Off state there is no over-voltage protection. If none of your signals/sensors can source > 20 mA, then there should be no concerns. But if higher current can be sourced, then you should disconnect signals/sensors before powering down the USB-2020.

The USB-2020 provides no isolation between the field wiring and the USB interface. Our USB-1602HS device (although it’s not as fast as the USB-2020) supports two 16 bit analog inputs with a sample rate of 2 MS/sec/channel and offers the isolation that you are looking for. The USB-1602HS supports 500 VDC minimum isolation between field wiring and USB interface. You can review the specifications here: http://www.mccdaq.com/usb-data-acquisition/USB-1602HS.aspx

The USB-2020 is currently not supported under MATLAB’s Data Acquisition Toolbox. We are working towards adding support for newer USB products. Unfortunately, we do not have a time frame just yet for this device.

Thank you for your inquiry. What you are describing below sounds very much like our “BURSTIO” mode. When using BURSTIO you acquire data from the USB-2020 on 1 or 2 channels at maximum rate of 20MS/s per channel to the USB-2020’s internal memory (64 MS). The data is then read from the FIFO and transferred to the PC buffer. The acquisition can be started by a software command or via an external trigger. Please feel free to contact Sales Engineer to further discuss your application.

There is not yet MATLAB support for the USB-2020 from The Mathworks. But the main factor here, given your throughput needs of 30M samples/second, is that the USB-2020 (in continuous mode) is limited to 8M. The PCI-DAS4020/12 would meet your needs.

Thanks for your interest in our USB-2020. For the first version of the USB-2020, MCC decided to stay with USB 2.0. We realize that USB 3.0 offers the ability to continuously stream full-rate data to host computers and are looking at this technology for future revisions of the product. Please let MCC know if you have an application for this feature - we always want to be market driven.
