Good equipment

I've used several USB-2416 devices for 8 years now. It meets my needs for temperature distribution & heat penetration in food products and processing systems. They hold a calibration well. My main concern is with the TracerDAQ software, which seems a bit clunky, and can lead to data loss if the device has even a tiny data disruption (like somebody bumping the USB cable).

Time lag between digital and analog inputs

Used to acquire data and monitor a test stand with Dasylab. We have faced a major issue: digital inputs are software clocked (Windows / Dasylab) whereas analog inputs are hardware clocked. This resulted in a growing time lag between analog and digital inputs that we could not solve. We are forced to switch to another solution.

Only one little issue.

The DAQ works well. It interfaced with the computer easily. I needed some support from MCC to get it to talk to Dasylab. The tech support recognized immediately that my older version of Dasylab was incompatible with the updates so he linked me to a previous version of the MCC software. It worked. Excellent service. The only issue I have are the digital I/Os. Previously we have use IOTech DAQs to drive solid-state-relays directly. The USB-2416's I/Os do not have enough current capability to directly drive the SSRs. In order to drive SSRs you will need a separate drive buffer or a conditioner. Otherwise, so far so good.

While the digital I/O architecture differs between the USB-2416 and the IOtech series, a separate buffer/conditioner is not necessary. However, an external power supply and external resistors would be needed. The USB-2416 has the added flexibility to switch much more current (up to 150 mA total divided by the # of bits used), and at a much higher voltage (up to 15V). To do so you would connect one (user-supplied) external supply, thru a resistor per bit (to limit current), to each USB-2416 output bit. The open-drain design of the USB-2416’s digital outputs is such that when you write a “1” out in software, the output will be taken (shorted) to ground.

Only MCC’s factory can perform a full re-calibration of the USB-2416 model. In the field, you can verify the accuracy for the range(s) you need/use, by installing our free InstaCal software utility. From within InstaCal, make sure the datarate for each and every channel is set to 60 Hz in InstaCal. 60 Hz is the setting recommend for thermocouple, so that 60 Hz noise can be better rejected. Make sure the USB-2416 is warmed up for 45 minutes, then run the self-cal in InstaCal (hand's free). The self cal makes minor adjustments based on the last factory calibration, and does not extend the cal cycle past 1 year. Then use InstaCal's analog test, which samples just 1 channel at a time, and the value is displayed digitally on the screen. Voltage accuracy probably only needs to be checked on one channel, as it should not vary channel to channel. Thermocouple accuracy can vary channel to channel, due to cold junction compensation. You would compare the reading you see on the screen, to the maximum specs in the appropriate table in the back of the PDF manual for the USB-2416, though you may also have to factor in the accuracy of your signal source.

We are planning to send this device off for calibration in the near future. During production, we have a program that interfaces with this device to record measurements. I was not in this project at inception, so I don't know if there were any setting hard coded into the device my the design team.Is there even the potential for saved settings o and datan this device? Or is it all on the fly?

No measurement data is stored on the USB-2416 after power removed. However, most Windows programs written to use the USB-2416 do utilize channel settings stored on the hardware. The software that does not is DAQami and some custom programs written by end-users using the device discovery feature of the UL. But for the vast majority of software(LabVIEW, TracerDAQ, DASYLab, and UL applications that fully rely on InstaCal), the settings stored on the USB-2416 are key to keeping track of. If you send a USB-2416 to us for repair and/or calibration, those settings will be lost. You should first go into InstaCal, to step through the per-channel settings (SE/DIFF, Voltage/Temperature, Datarate, TC type) and make a note of them.

I think there must be a USB cable coming with the package, so when we plug it into the computer, nothing else would be required; but there are other accessories mentioned below the product which makes me confused about whether I must buy them or not.

Sir/Ma'am, Kindly spread some light on these doubts related to the specifications of your DAQ. 1) We would like to measure 20 nano Volts (which is the sensitivity of our accelerometer module). Is your DAQ capable of reading such an input? 2) What is the amplitude of the digitization noise the DAQ produces? 3) Also, what is the true bit rating of the DAQ? Thank you.

Depends if you want Differential or single ended measurements and maybe on how many channels you need to measure. For example, if unsure about grounding, you can connect your signal between C0L and C0H (or any CnL-CnH) and use differential reading; this way grounding doesn't matter. Make sure to connect a resistor between 2416 GND and your device ground; maybe 100Khm; read manual if you want to know why.

The USB-2416 is somewhat unique, in that you can select a mix of single-ended and differential channels. This selection is made, channel-pair by channel-pair, from within InstaCal. After configuring the channels, next you should use InstaCal’s analog test … which will display the recommended wiring connection for each channel. It will show you which screw terminal to connect to, and whether or not you need to also connect to a ground (GND) screw terminal.

Thank you for your inquiry. The USB-2416 is accurate down into the uVolt range. Your absolute accuracy will depend on the selected input range. Based on your input range of 200 uV up to 5 volts, you would have to select the +- 5 volt range. So if we looked at the accuracy for this range you could expect to see on average about 150 uV of error. Please feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions.

You don’t say what thermocouple type you are using with the USB-2416, but it is likely T-type.The upper limit for T-Type with the USB-2416 hardware is indeed about 750 deg F. (Table 3 in the USB-2416 hardware manual’s specs lists the T-type upper limit as 400 deg C). Each of the 7 other thermocouple types listed are supported to much higher temperatures.

Answers

Hello Wizz - The maximum AI sample rate in your application program (in this case TracerDAQ) will be affected by the “data rate” setting made for each channel in InstaCal. In order to sample at 1000 Hz, all channels being sampled must be set to the 3750 Hz data rate. Lowering the data rate for a channel tells the A/D converter to spend more time on that channel, slowing down the aggregate sample rate that all channels can be sampled. There is a formula in the user manual that describes the tradeoff. Lowering the data rate on a channel improves the accuracy on that channel, and can also help filter noise.

MeasurementComputing

Was this answer helpful? Yes (5) / No (0)

Mostly figured it out. The sample rate is the 'aggregate' rate (great marketing term). The 1K/sec is only for one channel. The rate ~ halves for every channel added for the smaller daqs. For this daq I'm hoping it's 1000/32~31hz...although I haven't read the fine print so it could be better than this.

The alarm feature that is included with TracerDAQ PRO is only a visual alarm. Regrettably, there is no association between the TracerDAQ PRO alarm settings and the USB-2416-4AO’s digital output bits. Our recommendation would be to use our DASYLab Graphical programming language. With DASYLab you could easily build your application and with the use of a comparator or trigger, control the digital output bits based on feedback from your inputs.
